ORCID Researcher Identifier: Why register?

Open Researcher and Contributors ID - persistent digital author identifier

Why is managing your author identity important?

Benefits of managing your author identity include:

  • Less ambiguity as to who has published a certain paper when different variations of an author’s name have been used
  • Ability to accurately measure citations of individual papers or authors
  • Easier evaluation of an author’s productivity and impact in his/her field
  • Improved research impact
  • Simplified data handling and storage; author identification only has to be stored in one place
  • Richer cross-referencing possible, e.g., search engines, browsers, and other applications can create links between an author’s biographical information and his/her published works
  • Opportunity to create new networks of data, e.g., academic genealogies

Why ORCID?

Irish ORCID Consortium

The Irish ORCID consortium currently comprises twenty members from the higher education and funding sectors.

Dundalk Institute of Technology is a member of the consortium.

Consortia membership is the premium level of membership and includes the following benefits:

  • 5 ORCID premium member API credentials;
  • the ability to read/write to the profiles of researchers (with permission);
  • monthly analytics reports with personalised statistics from ORCID ensuring more complete reporting of research outputs;
  • dedicated technical and community support.

Saves you time...

An ORCID ID can reduce repetitive data entry. As ORCID is increasingly implemented into other systems the exchange of profile or publication data easier.

This can be data:

  • for manuscript submissions to publishers who have implemented ORCID  or
  • from and to other ID systems (e.g. Researcher ID, Scopus Author ID) or
  • for funding applications to agencies that have implemented ORCID
  • used by employers or professional associations
